The Resurrection of Christ<\/a> by Titian<\/a><\/strong> is a work created by the Venetian painter<\/strong> between 1542 and 1544<\/strong> and is still preserved at the National Gallery of the Marche<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Resurrection of Christ<\/a> by Titian<\/a><\/strong> was part of a processional banner<\/strong> commissioned to Titian by the Confraternity of Corpus Domini of Urbino.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also included in the same banner was his Last Supper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although originally the two works<\/strong> were on the same banner, in 1545<\/strong> they were separated by the painter Pietro Viti<\/strong> and were displayed on either side of the main altar of the church of the Confraternity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artwork and the patrons<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, <\/strong>Titian<\/strong> <\/a>created a banner consisting of the Resurrection<\/strong> and the Last Supper<\/strong>, all commissioned by the Confraternity of Corpus Domini of Urbino.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After being created in Venice<\/strong>, the work<\/strong> arrived in Urbino<\/strong> and came into the possession of the Della Rovere<\/strong> family, one of the main patron families of Titian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work, after being transferred to the Marche, was detached from the banner and placed on either side of the main altar in the church of the confraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the marriage of the last descendant of the family, Vittoria<\/strong>, to Ferdinando II de\u2019 Medici<\/strong>, these masterpieces passed into the Florentine collections of the Medici.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today the Resurrection<\/strong> is the only work remaining in Urbino originally commissioned by the Della Rovere family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The style and characteristics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Resurrection<\/a><\/strong> is divided into two parts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the lower area, created with oblique and broken lines<\/strong> that give movement and drama to the whole, the soldiers in agitation and the empty sarcophagus<\/strong> are depicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, in the upper part, the blessing Christ<\/strong> rises against a dawn sky, with statuary features. In the Resurrection<\/em><\/strong>, the dramatic effect is heightened by the intense luminism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure of the Risen Christ<\/strong>, heroically represented above, is captured in a classical sculpture-like pose, set against the backdrop of the sunset sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The compositional axis<\/strong> is formed by the corner of the sarcophagus<\/strong>, which ideally extends into the figure of Jesus, whose serene statuary presence contrasts with the agitation and movement of the characters in the lower part of the painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
