There, the great sovereign left a mark that is not only latent, and in popular culture – where he is called Eskander “with two horns,” referring to the shape of the helmet he wore – the feeling of belonging to that ancient lineage is still prevalent.

On a more visual and artistic heritage level, I admit that I have always been fascinated by the remnants of that ancient culture that have emerged in Afghanistan (Badakhshan), Pakistan, and India. I remember being overwhelmed by the discovery of Gandhara sculptures like the head of Prince Siddhartha, in the collection of George Ortiz, where the hand and technique, the language, are fully Hellenic while on the anthropological level there is no doubt that we are facing an Eastern statue.

I am ethnically Russian, so I have inherited Hellenism by birth, which has also passed through us via the Eastern Roman Empire and particularly through Byzantine visual civilization. I find it interesting, and in its way also ironic, that the great classical lesson has been distorted since the 1930s under the weight of Stalinist aesthetics, which placed great value on national, local decorative motifs specific to the socialist republics.

I grew up in Bishkek, which was previously called Frunze, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by plastic and architectural examples of classical origin but refined, integrated with elements specific to Kyrgyz tradition. It is not absurd, for example, to find all the parts that make up the classical entablature at the top of a building in the center of Bishkek, which, while respecting the Greek composition, is adorned with motifs from the Islamic visual world.

There is a saying in Russia: history tends to repeat itself, but the second time it repeats as farce. The communists, whom we could define as pseudo-Hellenes, are the second farcical time after the first time of Alexander the Great, in full agreement with the popular definition! And what we see today could almost be called a postmodern Neo-Hellenism.

As for me, I consider myself a Hellenist and not a Hellenic; for me, the ancient world is not something external to look at or return to, it is my primordial soup, the unique and natural dimension from which my creations come and that I see around me as a spontaneous interpretative filter that conditions and qualifies every perception I have.

Besides ancient culture, are there other artistic models from which you draw inspiration?

There certainly are. I have always greatly admired Carlo Scarpa, whom I consider a genius and a true point of reference for me. I am also an architect, and my public art involves constructing space as well as the work itself. Carlo Scarpa taught me to manage the relationship between the two aspects, much like the Russian artistic avant-gardes and the constructivist movement, which in my view is linked to the subsequent outcomes of deconstructivism that matured in Europe and America, facilitated here by technological evolution.

Last but not least, I am a great lover of cinema, a true addict, and I consider it a powerful and rich source of inspiration. When I think of my twenties, directors like Yasujirō Ozu or Dziga Vertov come to mind, whose films I could still watch endlessly today, because for me cinema is primarily image, an optical and visual dimension, where the plot is the compendium of a wonder that captures the gaze before the attention on the story. I feel the same way about Lars Von Trier or Stanley Kubrick; their films for me are sequences of paintings.

I have beautiful memories from the 1990s in Moscow, where there was an art house cinema that screened films in their original language, always empty, where you entered with a ticket at a symbolic price; it was called Illusion and was inside one of the Stalinist skyscrapers. There, I saw Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” for the first time, unforgettable, and thinking back to that place, the definition of a cinematic museum spontaneously arises today.

Speaking of cinema and Čyngyz Aitmatov, among the films that have most influenced my creative paths, I cannot forget “The First Teacher” by Andrei Konchalovsky, from 1965, inspired by a story from the great Kyrgyz writer.

We have noticed how mountains represent for you the link between man and nature; your work is titled Mount Aitmatov. Can you tell us more about it?

As anyone who has read his books or seen his interviews knows, for Ajtmatov, nature has been both a source of inspiration and a refuge. Many of the early Bolsheviks, including Čyngyz Ajtmatov’s father, were victims of Stalinist repression. Čyngyz thus grew up with his paternal grandmother in an aiyl, which is an isolated village in the mountains, specifically called Şeker and located in the Talas region; the mountains were his sanctuary, his first familial and sentimental homeland, where he lived his childhood, formed his earliest memories, and Mother Nature was the springboard that launched him into the Olympus of literature.

How crucial all this is when approaching his narratives becomes even clearer when we consider that he studied to be a livestock technician, a specialist who took care of cattle in the kolkhoz. He was destined for an administrative role within an agricultural enterprise, but instead, he leveraged what was most familiar and close to him, the great peaks and the natural world, to free his true aspiration. It goes without saying that the mountains have also inspired me in conveying this image of Ajtmatov.

Ajtmatov was one of the leading intellectuals of his country, and you, to create this work, also drew from the encounters you had with him personally. What has stayed with you the most from these conversations? Why, in your opinion, might those who do not know Ajtmatov be drawn to him?

Ajtmatov is the genius loci of Kyrgyzstan. An international intellectual in the 1970s and 1980s, a friend of European writers, a spokesperson for our world in old Europe. I grew up in a building that was a residence for university professors, where the great Kyrgyz poet Aaly Tokambaev, a friend of Ajtmatov, also lived.

I often played with Tokambaev’s grandson and had the opportunity to meet Ajtmatov at least a couple of times at his home. However, I cannot forget when – I must have been around 12 years old – we were told at school that the writer would visit us along with the British spy story author John Le Carré; I was beside myself, in the days leading up to that great meeting, and while I may have forgotten the appearance of the English writer on that occasion, I still distinctly remember Ajtmatov and the impression of his presence; it is a memory destined to remain vivid for the rest of my life.

I am convinced that his literature lends itself very well to translation into Western languages. Initially, he wrote in Kyrgyz, his mother tongue learned and practiced while living with his grandmother, then he began to translate his own writing into Russian and finally arrived at a very constructed and structured Russian.

The language of his early works is certainly simpler and more suitable for translation into other cultures. I also think that his fundamental merit is not stylistic – as in Nabokov, for example – but rather the narrative aspect, being imbued with a humanistic pathos that seems to have disappeared from contemporary literature, influenced by politics and political correctness. He did not think about these things; he focused on the essential issues of civilization and humanity, creating what I call Neolithic literature.

Throughout your career, you have exhibited in important museums, including the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy.
